Meet Dimitris Argyros, Senior Advisor, Performance

Kicking off our ‘Meet the Team’ series with Dimitris Argyros, Senior Advisor for the Performance Stream, and a key member of our Product team. With deep expertise in vessel performance and emissions reduction, Dimitris has played an integral role in the development of our maritime operations platform, OpenOcean STUDIO, and has seen firsthand how technology and regulations are reshaping the industry.

Can you share a bit about your career journey and what led you to specialise in maritime technology?

I have always worked in maritime but early in my career I took a path towards vessel performance and emissions reduction technology. Although this was originally opportunistic, once I was in that area, I found it dynamic, fast evolving and thought that it was unlikely to ever become boring. And I was probably right.

Looking ahead to 2025, what do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges in fleet performance management?

We are now firmly into a territory where GHG emissions are directly linked with costs. Now that EU ETS and FuelEU have come into force, one can see the direct translation of every tonne of fuel/CO2 in monetary terms, whether a company is liable directly or as cost to be passed on. This presents challenges in terms of the administrative burden and the risks around getting it wrong but also significant opportunities for optimisation.

What role does data-driven decision-making play in improving vessel performance, and how does 90POE support this?

There are two angles to the data: Firstly, there is the compliance and regulatory/stakeholder reporting, mentioned above, with all the challenges but also opportunities that this brings. Secondly, the same data can be leveraged for optimising your fleet. There can be different initiatives, depending on whether you are an owner, operator or both. It can be anything from weather routing and speed profile optimisation, providing data-driven and accurate vessel descriptions, monitoring vessel performance (in terms of hull/propeller and main/aux engines), down to tracking and minimising other costs and consumables (such as lubricating oil). 90POE can help in all of those areas.

If you could give one piece of advice to maritime businesses looking to enhance their performance and sustainability, what would it be?

I would start by setting realistic expectations and objectives. There may be 10 or even 20 things that you aspire to do, but it might not be realistic to aim for all of them at once, especially if your resources are limited. Focus on clear, achievable goals to drive real progress, and of course reach out to speak to us – providing value for our customers through the use of OpenOcean STUDIO is absolutely our passion.
